Unquestionably cutting edge in its day, with a Formula 1 derived V12 engine mated to a manual gearbox, carbon chassis and the highest of pedigrees – the F50 is now revered as one of the ultimate supercars ever created.
Produced in celebration of Ferrari’s 50th anniversary this now legendary ‘F-car’ was a super limited edition (only 349 were made) road going Formula 1 car with a focussed, purist approach to performance. No power steering assisted braking or ABS but utilising a blend of composite materials and F1 derived construction technology and aerodynamic know-how.
Like all Ferraris, the engine is the stand out feature and dominates the experience – the F50’s V12 was derived from the engine of Ferrari’s 1989 F1 car but with a capacity increased to 4.7 litres to deliver more torque. Peak power of 513bhp was delivered at 8500rpm and translated a 3.7sec 0-62mph time and a top speed in excess of 200mph.
‘The Enzo is more sophisticated and arguably a greater achievement, but Ferrari perfected what we think of as a supercar when it made the F50. It’s the most engaging physically and emotionally, which is why it’s the best supercar Ferrari has made.’
