The BMW Z8 roadster was produced between 1999 and 2003 in very small numbers. Originally designed by Henrik Fisker, as an homage to Albrecht von Goertz ‘s wonderful BMW 503 and 507’s of the 1950’s. The Z8 was produced almost unchanged from the Z07 concept show car that had caused a sensation when shown by BMW at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show.

The onward march of time seems to have been kind to the Z8 – is it the car’s styling, cracking V8 or limited production run that’s kick-started the Z8’s appreciation society? Collectors now covet the Z8

Under the Z8’s retro bonnet you’ll find the 5 litre V8 from the E39 M5 mated to the M5’s Getrag six-speed manual gearbox.  BMW claims a 0-62mph time of 4.7sec and in a straight line it feels every bit as fast as the figures suggest. Being able to drop the hood at the touch of button also allows you to hear the V8 strutting its stuff and it goes through its full repertoire of off-beat V8 burble at idle to a voracious bellow as you approach the red line.

With its all-aluminium body looking like that of no other modern era BMW it is no surprise that the interior is equally distinct with a beautifully referenced retro-styled steering wheel with a slender rim supported by wire spokes and distinctive tow section ‘split’ dash design.

As you’d expect from a luxury roadster, the Z8 came with just about everything ‘as standard’ (electric leather seats, sat-nav housed in the radio’s display hidden beneath a panel in front of the gear lever, a 10-speaker stereo, xenons, anthracite headlining and air-con) although this car also comes with the hard top.

Today with the modern classic / retro vibe very much in vogue the Z8 is now seen as more desirable than when it was new. It’s a funny old world sometimes…
