Bell Sport & Classic are delighted to offer this wonderful example of the iconic & extremely rare lightweight, high performance version of the DB4 model range.
Originally introduced in 1959, only @75 cars were ever built to this specification, featuring bespoke specifications, such as shortened wheelbase, thinner gauge aluminium for the bodywork, enclosed headlights & at the heart of these special cars was a highly modified engine, featuring High compression pistons, modified cylinder head with twin spark plugs, per cylinder, twin distributors & triple twin choke weber carburettors.
So iconic were these limited run cars that over the years several ‘continuation’ cars have been built, with latterly Aston Martin Heritage running a small number of GT SWB cars for track use only, & for a limited & invited only group of lucky purchasers.
The car on offer today at Bell Sport & Classic, was originally supplied back in 1960, to a Mr G. Claridge of Berkhamstead in Hertfordshire, as a regular DB4 Saloon. Originally finished in Peony Red, with White Gold (Cream) Hide, our car went through several owners throughout the 60’s & 70’s, spending many years in the north east of England. The car remained in storage for a number of years with Goldsmith & Young, renown Aston specialists. It was whilst with them, that it found a new keeper @2002, who decided to undertake the conversion to GT SWB specification. We have a lovely photographic record of the conversion on file. The conversion work was carried out to the highest standard, under the guidance of John Goldsmith, with the bodywork being removed, and the chassis work all carried out to original SWB GT specifications. The engine was uprated to 4,200 cc with Cosworth pistons, converted to run on lead free petrol. The cylinder head is the correct twin spark GT spec, with twin distributors. Both inlet & exhaust manifolds are the correct type, with new triple webers fitted at the time. The David Brown gearbox has overdrive fitted, making driving the car in modern traffic conditions much more pleasant. The car was fitted with the correct GT fuel tank in the boot, with spare wheel attached. The car also has a rare set of aluminium brake calipers fitted with a remote servo. The suspension was all built to ‘fast road’ spec, with lowered roll centres & adjustable Watts linkage. The luggage space is equipped with a vintage suitcase & leather straps to secure safely.
This is a car that has been built to exacting standards & represents amazing value today against the potential cost of the original item.
