Limited to 333 units worldwide (this car is No. 131) and only 33 for the UK – the Audi R8 GT was created to celebrate the on-track success of its LMS racing cousin which had taken a one-two at the Nurburgring 24-hour.
The answer to the prayers of those who thought the regular V10 R8 Spyder wasn't quick enough, the GT Spyder follows the principles of more power and less weight, along with a healthy dose of revisions to the suspension.
Audi's engineers went over the R8 with a fine-tooth comb to strip it of weight, with the result that the GT is 85kg lighter than the regular V10 Spyder. At the same time, they uprated the V10 engine to produce 552bhp (30bhp+ more than the standard V10), and the combined effect is a 0-60mph time of 3.8 seconds and on to 197 mph.
Thanks to the lowered and recalibrated suspension, the GT is much sharper to change direction than the standard R8 Spyder, while the standard four-wheel-drive system (which is strongly biased to rear-wheel drive) keeps everything under control. Throw in great grip, tremendous balance and super-strong brakes, and the result is a car that inspires huge confidence, and puts a huge smile on your face.
Accelerating flat-out towards a corner with that glorious engine bellowing behind you, then jumping on the brakes while you go down through the gears, with the engine auto-blipping perfectly in response to each tug on the wheel-mounted paddles, is an experience like no other.
