Ferrari says there hasn’t been a front-engined Ferrari Spider since the 365 GTS4 so the Roma soft-top has big hand-made loafers to fill.

Featuring a classic canvas roof (which disappears in 13.5 seconds at speeds up to 37mph) as opposed to a folding metal hard top, the Roma Spider is squarely aimed at those looking for a return to Ferrari design elegance.

Stunning in the flesh, it is a elegant, glamorous looking Ferrari and as pretty a car as Ferrari has made in recent years.

Unburdened by any need for hybrid add-ons and with 612bhp coming from the 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 allied to the Ferrari eight-speed dual-clutch transmission there’s certainly no knocking the way the Roma Spider performs. Use all of the nearly 8000rpm at your disposal and of course it is hugely fast with cleverly designed aero that suppresses the buffeting when the roof’s down.

The Roma Spider retains the Coupé's rear seats which like in many 2+2 coupes are on the small side - more useful for storage than carrying people, but the good thing is that in a pinch, you can.

The Ferrari Roma Spider is a fabulously seductive car, a little softer in character than the Coupe but still laser-focused in its intent and still harder edged than all of its rivals.
