Maserati stormed back onto the supercar scene with this, the utterly brilliant MC20. It's never easy to compete at this very pinnacle of the sports car world but the MC20 absolutely nailed it.

Crowned evo Magazine’s Car of the Year, the MC20 beat supercar rivals including the Ferrari 296GTB, McLaren Artura and Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS in the process.

The MC20 ticks all the boxes for a modern supercar – 2 seats, full carbon tub, hugely powerful twin-turbo V6, clever underbody aerodynamics, double wishbone suspension, adaptive damping all-round, an eight-speed twin-clutch gearbox and a quoted weight figure of ‘under 1500kg’.

For many the hybrid-free power unit is a draw. No battery weight penalty and with 626bhp from its 3-litre capacity on ICE credentials alone, it’s pumping out over 200bhp per litre, backed up by 538lb ft of torque. Performance is correspondingly impressive with 0-62 arriving in 2.9 seconds and on to 203 mph.

The MC20 is outstandingly comfortable and refined -the ride quality in the default ‘GT’ mode is very good at isolating the occupants from the worst of British roads. It’s this demure personality that makes the MC20’s other, angrier side all the more shocking. In Sport or Corsa modes the V6 finds a thunderous voice and punches really hard in the mid-range, piling on speed effortlessly.

Compared with its rivals the MC20 offers a more elegant sort of Italian, mid-engined supercar that melds genuine GT ability with all the outright performance you might hope for, yet in a particularly usable, friendly and involving way.
