Let’s be honest, if you have an SLS Coupe the first thing anyone wants to talk about is those doors. Inspired by the original 300 SL Gullwing, the doors are theatre before the engine has even fired. What makes them work is that they are not a gimmick bolted onto an ordinary car, the whole shape of the SLS is built around them: the long bonnet, the low cabin, the wide sills, the sense that you are climbing into something engineered rather than styled.

There is no doubt that the SLS is a bona fide modern classic. The design has proven timeless, while the car’s character is the absolute pinnacle of old-school AMG - unnecessary tech and electrical assistance are nowhere to be found and the naturally aspirated V8 still sits among the finest of its kind.

Launched at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show SLS AMG was a landmark model: the first complete car developed in-house by AMG and their statement supercar after the SLR McLaren era.
At its heart sits AMG’s magnificent 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, producing 563 bhp and 650 Nm of torque. Mounted behind the front axle and paired with a rear-mounted 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT dual-clutch transaxle, it gives the SLS genuine supercar architecture rather than grand-tourer convention.

Performance remains formidable even today: 0–62 mph in around 3.8 seconds and a top speed just shy of 200 mph. The aluminium spaceframe, double-wishbone suspension, rear limited-slip differential, dry-sump lubrication and active rear aero underline the depth of engineering beneath the wonderfully theatrical styling.

On the road, the SLS is defined by contrast: immense torque and long-legged usability, yet with genuine focus when driven hard. The steering is quick, the chassis feels rigid and alert, and the naturally aspirated V8 delivers a soundtrack and throttle response that feel increasingly special in today’s turbocharged era. It is a car with real theatre, but also real engineering integrity, a hand-built AMG supercar with a front-mid-engined layout, transaxle balance and the kind of analogue mechanical character collectors now demand.

It is widely referenced that whilst there were approximately 8,000 standard SLS AMG Coupés worldwide only around 250 supplied to the UK making the original Gullwing Coupé a core collector model.

As a low mileage 2012 one previous owner SLS AMG Coupé, this car sits in a particularly compelling position. The Coupé is the purest expression of the model, because the gullwing doors are central to the SLS identity.
