Few modern-era Porsches have such a reputation as the 911 Type 996 GT2. At launch it was Porsche’s fastest and most expensive model, in effect a cross-between the quick comfort of the 911 Turbo and the hardcore track-focus of the GT3.
10 percent more powerful and 7 percent lighter than the 911 Turbo from which it evolved, the GT2 did away with the rear seats and heavy front differentials and added lightweight parts including carbon ceramic brakes as standard (a first for Porsche) to shed some 100kg in total.
Fitted with a 456bhp 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six ‘Mezger’ engine derived from Porsche’s Le Mans winning 911 GT1 delivering through the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, the GT2 dispatches 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds thanks to its larger KKK 24 turbochargers and boost pressure of 14.5psi.
The result was nothing short of mind-blowing – a razor-sharp, seriously quick supercar that rewarded committed drivers with depths of performance few of its rivals could achieve. With zero driver aids and power delivered directly to the rear wheels the GT2 quickly developed a reputation for being the ultimate driver’s car whilst also earning the moniker of “the widowmaker”.
