The Ferrari Daytona epitomised the drama and flamboyance of the era (1970s) and this example in particular comes with an association to two very different but equally interesting owners who defined the spirit and sounds of the period.
The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (‘365’ denoting the engines displacement in cubic centimetres per cylinder and ‘4’ denoting its number of overhead camshafts) was introduced as the replacement to the 275 GTB/4 with the intention of competing against Lamborghini’s formidable Miura. Sleek and modern Pininfarina lines (from a young Leonardo Fioravanti, who would go on to pen many other Ferraris including the 512 BB, 308 GTB, 288 GTO and F40) were matched by a development of the 4.4-litre V12 engine and produced a car of rare balance which guaranteed a unique driving experience. Many fans know it by its unofficial name of “Daytona” a name supposedly in recognition of the Ferrari 1-2-3 victory in the Daytona 24-Hour Race in 1967.
Powered by an increased-capacity, longer-block derivative of the twin overhead camshaft per bank V12 unit used in th 275 GTB4 and with factory type reference 251, of 4390cc capacity the ‘Daytona’ delivers an impressive 347 horsepower at 7,500 rpm with 0-60 mph in just 5.4 seconds and a monstrous top speed of 174mph!
History:
Ordered Mr. G. Linzell of Grays Essex ordered a new Ferrari 365 GTB/4 from Maranello Concessionaires Ltd.
Spec’d in Argento Auteuil with Nero leather and Dark Blue Scuro carpets (Blue Scuro), light grey roof lining and factory option air-conditioning.
Imported by Maranello Concessionaires Ltd. on the 9thDecember 1970 and first registered on the plate EPF 24J on 01.01.1971
Purchased by Mr B. Caira of Kirkcaldy, Scotland before it was then bought back by Maranello Concessionaires when Mr. Caira ordered its successor the GTC4.
Maranello Concessionaires briefly used the Chassis 13915 as a demonstrator in before the car was bought by Mr Pascoe Watson of the Avenger Boat Co. in December 1971
Having just turned 21 and receiving his inheritance, on the 13th April 1972 Lord Hesketh of Conduit Street W.1. purchased the car (part exchanging a Silver Dino 246 GT) owning the car for the next decade as he became widely recognised through his motor racing activity most notable with the team that went on to become the Hesketh Racing Formula 1 team and his driver the future World Champion James Hunt.
Subsequent to Lord Hesketh’s ownership the car spent a short period in Japan prior to being sold via European Auto Sales Inc California, arriving with Mr G.J Andrews of Angmering Village West Sussex in August 1988.
Upon purchase, the next owner had the car restored by Stephen moody of MSD Motor Company Ltd between November 1988 and February 1989. The car was refinished in “Ferrari Grigio Scuro”
On the 21.02.1990 the car was registered to legendary blues guitarist and rock icon Mr Eric Clapton who enjoyed the restored car in ‘his colours’ for the next decade, forming part of what was at the time a famous and substantial Ferrari collection.
Eventually sold by Mr Clapton, Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Chassis No. 13915 Car was purchased by Cambourne Investments on the 20thDecember 2002 who owned the Ferrari until its arrival with us at Bell Sport & Classic.
